What Is Chiropractic?
The Chiropractic approach to health is based on the premise that the human body is self-healing and self-regulating. This inborn intelligence resides in all of us, from the day we are conceived to the way we die.
The human body is designed to be healthy – in fact optimal health is normal! And if you’re not experiencing optimal health, then something must be interfering with your natural, inborn ability to self heal and experience life to the fullest.
The Master Control system in the human body is the Nervous System… consisting of the brain, spinal cord and nerves. The brain is protected by the hard skull and the spinal cord protected by the spine. The spine itself is made up of 24 vertebra and 23 discs. Between each vertebra and behind each disc exit the spinal nerves.
Chiropractors examine the function of the spine and its direct relationship with the brain and spinal cord. When correct function of the spine is lost, this may affect the communication between the brain and the body (via the spinal cord and nerves) and this in turn may decrease the body’s ability to function at 100%. When this happens parts of your body may hurt or may not work properly.
Chiropractors aim to restore function of the spine as well as improve the body’s ability to adapt to the stresses of everyday life. Stress can come in the form of bad posture, prolonged sitting, inactivity, physical trauma, emotional stress, diet and nutrition, and much more.
People who receive chiropractic care generally report feeling less pain, more flexibility, improved posture, decreased headaches, less injuries, increased energy, better quality of sleep and an overall feeling of general wellness.
What to Expect during your appointments
Your Visit – Initial Consultation and Examination
Upon attending for the first time we will ask you to complete a thorough questionnaire before meeting Dr Ahmad. He will perform a thorough history, asking you some specific questions to fully understand your current complaint, health status and previous medical history. This is followed by a comprehensive examination of the muscles, joints, ligaments, discs and nerves and if required you may be referred away for x-rays to get a better understanding of your spine and body.
You should allow approximately 30 minutes for your first visit. During this time your chiropractor will use all of the information obtained to determine the nature and cause of your complaint and whether chiropractic care can help you.
Your Second Visit – Report of Findings
Your second visit will take about 30 minutes and usually begins with a personalized review of your examination and radiological results. Dr Ahmad will highlight any concerns and important aspects about your current state of health and will explain in detail the cause of your problem, your prospects for recovery and what you can do to help speed the healing process.
During this time some of the most important questions most patients have when they consult us will be answered. These include:
What’s wrong? What is the cause of my problem?
Is chiropractic the help I need?
How long will it take? How much care do I need?
How much will it cost?
What if I don’t do anything?
You will have plenty of time to ask questions before your Dr Ahmad takes you through to begin your schedule of chiropractic care.
Regular Visits – Adjustments
After the investment of time needed on the first and second visits, your regular chiropractic visits become routine and straight forward. The primary treatment is the chiropractic adjustment. An adjustment is a gentle, specific force applied to a specific joint with the aim of increasing movement, releasing tension and restoring function Patients are often pleasantly surprised at how comfortable this procedure is.
A typical visit will require about 15 minutes. Dr Ahmad will re-assess you, measure any changes and/or improvement from the last check-up and administer the necessary adjustments and care. You may also be given some advice or exercises to do at home.
Like a regular workout at the gym, each visit builds on the ones before. Miss a visit and you may lose the momentum necessary to make the needed changes.
