In Chinese Medicine there are several basic body types in relation to fertility and both men and women fall into one of these categories, even a complicated situation will always have an underlying cause. These basic types are the Kidney, Liver and Spleen type.

As well as playing a major role in water metabolism, the Kidneys in Chinese Medicine are also responsible for growth, development and reproduction. When there is an issue with fertility, the Kidneys are nearly always involved.  The Kidneys are effected by overworking and cold.

Typical signs and symptomsInfertility, back pain, low libido, fatigue, urination issues, impotence and fluid retention.

The Liver is a very important organ in Chinese Medicine as it controls the smooth flow of physical and mental activity, so if the Liver function is disrupted it can easily affect other organs of the body. The Liver is connected to all aspects of the blood in Chinese Medicine, and this means it plays a major role in regulating menstruation and most symptoms of PMS result from an imbalance in the functioning of the Liver. The Liver is effected by our lifestyle choices, having a stressful lifestyle, consuming too much alcohol or medications and not getting sufficient sleep are a few common reasons our Liver can become out of balance.

Typical signs and symptoms: Menstrual problems, fertility issues, irritability, anger and frustration, headaches and migraines, pain and stiffness in the body, depression and constipation.

The Spleen plays a major role in digestion, metabolism and menstruation in Chinese Medicine. To help keep the Spleen functioning well, it is important to eat well by consuming warm, nourishing foods that are easily digested and by getting an appropriate amount of exercise.

Typical signs and symptoms: Lack of appetite, fatigue, gynaecological problems, bloating, menstrual problems, fertility issues and indigestion.

You may recognise yourself in the descriptions above and this could be your underlying weakness though most people are a combination of several imbalances. Acupuncture may help resolve these imbalances to enhance your fertility and boost your chances of conceiving, as well as improve your overall health.
